The Child of Gorgon is an evil giant who was turned to stone thousands of years ago. Once turned to stone his body became known to Third Earthers as the Hills of Elfshima. The form of the sleeping giant is still visible when the hills are viewed against the silhouette of dawn. The name "Elfshima" is a clue to the true nature of the hills as it is an anagram of "I am flesh". The Child of Gorgon is a slave to whoever awakens it and is a powerful destructive force in the wrong hands.
As part of his plan to destroy the ThunderCats, Mumm-Ra once, reading from the Book of Norvag Naj, used the Mask of Gorgon and the Sword of Omens to awaken the Child of Gorgon. Giving the Mask the power of "Sight Beyond Sight", Mumm-Ra was able to bring to life the giant stone creature. Fortunately, Lynx-O and Bengali were able to attack the giant's inner ear using the ThunderStrike. This caused it to lose its balance and fall to the ground, creating a massive tremor which destroyed the Mask of Gorgon and turned the giant back into the Hills of Elfshima.
