Earl Hammond (born Erwin Saul Hamburger) was an American theater, radio, film, television and voice actor with an incredible body of work. Starting work in radio at the tender age of 7, Hammond would go on to have an illustrious career spanning over 70 years. As a radio actor, he had a recurring part on the soap opera "Days of Our Lives" in the 1940s and appeared on the "CBS Radio Mystery Theater" from 1979 to 1982. After his family moved to Buffalo, he appeared on the radio station WGR in 1938. After graduating from high school he studied drama at Los Angeles City College in California. After graduating in 1941, he was drafted and served in the Army during WWII. Hammond returned to New York City after being demobilized and appeared in theater and on the radio.
He appeared in a number of television series including "Kraft Television Theatre" (1947), "Inside Detective" (1950), and also had a part in the B-movie "Satan in High Heels" (1962). He appeared in three Broadway plays from 1957 to 1959, the short-lived musical "Livin' The Life' (1957), "Compulsion" (1959), and the unsuccessful musical "Juno" (1959).
He then ventured into voice acting and did work on a number of animated cartoons such as "The Space Giants" (1969), "Ultraman" (1972), "Star Blazers" (1979), and "The Adventures of the Galaxy Rangers" (1986). It was during this time that he was hired by Rankin/Bass to provide voices for their animated show ThunderCats. Hammond provided the voice of Mumm-Ra the main antagonist of the show. He also did the voices for a number of other characters. Later on he did voice work on the other Rankin/Bass cartoon show SilverHawks.
Earl Hammond died of heart failure on May 19, 2002 in New York City. He was 80 years old and is survived by a son and a daughter.

- He was also the voice of the Transformers villain "Megatron" in a series of children's read-along books published int eh 1980s.
- In 1994, Hammond was selected from several hundred actors who auditioned to be the voice of Pope John Paul II on the audiotape version of the Random House book "Crossing the Threshold of Hope". The publisher said the pope personally selected Hammond.
- He graduated from the Los Angeles City College in 1941 along with future stars Donna Reed and Alexis Smith.
- He learned Morse Code when he was in the army during World War II.
