The Great Sphinx is an ancient Egyptian statue that was built by the people of Third Earth. However, the statue isn't merely a stone structure but a living thing. It remains dormant, sleeping until it is disturbed. The Sphinx has the body of a lion, the wings of an eagle and the head of a human.
A long time ago, Mumm-Ra and Wizz-Ra engaged in a titanic battle near the site of the Great Sphinx. Mumm-Ra used his trickery and magic to crash Wizz-Ra's Ship right into the Sphinx. This caused the Sphinx to awaken from its slumber. Greatly angered by the injury caused to it by Wizz-Ra's ship, the Sphinx shot powerful beams from its eyes which banished Wizz-Ra to the Seventh Dimension.
