Key to Thundera is an episode from the original series of ThunderCats. Written by Matthew Malach, it originally aired on September 19, 1988.
Summary[]
After Lion-O and Snarf get trapped inside the Book of Omens, Mumm-Ra tries to make sure that they remain there forever.
Story[]
Inside Cats Lair, Lion-O and Snarf are frustrated at not being able to decipher the Book of Omens. Upon Snarf's suggestion, Lion-O uses the Sword of Omens as a magnifying glass to read the tome but that causes the sword and the book to interact and teleport Lion-O inside the book. A terrified Snarf quickly fetches Cheetara and as he tries to show her what happened to Lion-O, he too gets transported inside the Book of Omens.
Meanwhile, Mumm-Ra, who had been observing the proceedings from his cauldron, appears inside Cats Lair. Despite Cheetara's best efforts to stop him, Mumm-Ra succeeds in taking the Book of Omens and the Sword of Omens back to his Black Pyramid.
Inside the Book of Omens, Lion-O and Snarf come face to face with the Guardian of the Book of Omens. When the two ThunderCats fail to present the Key of Thundera to the guardian, it calls forth four Dragon pillars which blast the two with fire. As a last resort, Lion-O summons the Sword of Omens and it pulls the two ThunderCats out of the tome just before Mumm-Ra could destroy the book.
Mumm-Ra then launches an all out attack on Lion-O. Unable to face the mummy alone, Lion-O manages to call the other ThunderCats just before Mumm-Ra mummifies him and Snarf. Then Mumm-Ra tries to use the sword on the book and he too is transported inside the book. Cheetara and WilyKit arrive in the pyramid and free Lion-O and Snarf. Lion-O then goes inside the book and rescues Mumm-Ra before returning to the Cats Lair with his friends. There they meet Panthro and Tygra who had just returned form their trip to New Thundera and brought with them the Key of Thundera.

Trivia[]
- When the ThunderCats show was still being developed, Leonard Starr's early concept fofr the Sword of Omens was for it to have two magnifying glasses in its hilt. While this concept was not used, in this episode Snarf hints at it by recommending that Lion-O employ the sword as a magnifying glass.
- In this episode, Mumm-Ra affectionately refers to Ma-Mutt as putrid poodle and pusillanimous pooch.
- Inexplicably, many of the ThunderCats are absent from this episode including WilyKat.
