Return to Thundera - Part V is an episode from the original series of ThunderCats. Written by Peter Lawrence, it originally aired on September 8, 1989.
Summary[]
Mumm-Ra again seriously threatens to destroy the Gyroscope and thereby the newly reformed New Thundera. Jaga helps Lion-O think of a solution once and for all.
Story[]
Unable to continue construction of the New Cats Lair due to the erratic earthquakes and gravitational fluctuations, the ThunderCats are weighing their options on how to proceed forward. With Mumm-Ra having destroyed the Mighty Gyroscope’s regulator, there appears to be no other way to permanently stabilize the device. Lynx-O even goes as far as to suggest that they abandon New Thundera altogether. However, Torr] insists that they not give up, seeing as there are many Thunderian refugees like himself who want to return to their home planet just like he did.
Meanwhile, Mumm-Ra decides to speed up his evil scheme by heading straight to the Great Beneath and severely damaging the Gyroscope by firing energy bolts at it. This causes violent earthquakes and mayhem all over New Thundera. Jagara tries her best to stop Mumm-Ra but is unable to. The ThunderCats rush to the Churning Canyon, which is the entrance to the Great Beneath, but are unable to enter it as Mumm-Ra has enveloped the entire area in a magical force field.
After seeking Jaga’s advice, Lion-O uses the Sword of Omens to penetrate the force field and enter the Great Beneath. There he faces Mumm-Ra and the two engage in a furious battle, one which almost sees Lion-O falling to the bottom of the canyon. Only his quick reflexes and the Claw Shield save him from certain death. He then summons his friends using the sword, and the Cat Signal creates an opening in the force field which allows the ThunderCats’ vehicles to fly in.
With reinforcements from his friends, Lion-O is able to defeat Mumm-Ra. Seeing that he is grossly outnumbered, Mumm-Ra flees from the Great Beneath but not before cutting the cord that holds the Mighty Gyroscope. The monstrous device falls into the massive canyon below, disappearing in the dark abyss forever. All seems lost until Lion-O uses the power of the Eye of Thundera and turns the Sword of Omens into a makeshift Gyroscope. Panthro and Bengali then construct a brand new Gyroscope to take the place of the old one and Lion-O uses the sword to activate it.
